Samsung’s US semiconductor President Paul Cho, after sitting down with Patrick Moorhead at Six Five’s #AIUnleashed26: “Memory is the computer.” For decades the industry optimized for compute, measured progress in FLOPS, and sized memory around whatever the accelerator could do. That sequence is over. Throughput — concurrent users, time-to-answer, tokens per second — is set by memory bandwidth, not peak FLOPS. The constraint that matters now is usable bandwidth per watt. Design order flipped with it. Used to be: pick compute first, attach memory. Now memory capacity, bandwidth, and power often decide whether the system works at all. Customers are pulling memory vendors into architecture years earlier. That is the market catching up. Cho’s closer is the part that sticks: the apps that win will not be the ones with the most memory. They will be the ones that actually use the bandwidth they have. Samsung’s line: we are not just selling bits anymore. We are selling bandwidth.
